I purchased Project Planner SO 1 week ago. Today I cannot start SmartWorks server. How do I know what is happening? |
| When I try to start server it briefly flashes on the screen and then closes down without installing the service. Any ideas? |
| This could be due to one of the reasons given below: |
| 1. |
TCP/IP may not have been installed or configured on the PC where SmartWorks server is running. If this is the case, you may have to configure your PC to support TCP/IP. |
| 2. |
SmartWorks server runs at port number 6900 by default. If another service is running on the same port, the server will not start. In this case, you need to change the default port number to some other number say 7900, by invoking server manager. |
| 3. |
It could be possible that the server is running but the icon is not seen. To check this press CTRL + ALT + DEL together on a win 95/98 machine or invoke task manager on an NT machine and see if the "swserver.exe" is running. Please close the server and start it again. |

| I have purchased SmartWorks - HO. Currently have the SmartWorks server running on a MS XP Professional OS. I get error “Your current license is for limited users; Server returned an error 402” on one of my PC. Do I need to work on same workstation always? How do I resolve this problem? |
5 licenses means 5 work stations independent of users. That is how SmartWorks licensing works. You can clear all the registered licenses from SmartWorks server by an option provided at SmartWorks server. New set of licenses gets registered automatically when clients connect to the server.
Please run server manager and user “Clear License” option to clear previously registered licenses.
If you are not running the server as service, SmartWorks server icon is seen as tray icon. Please right click on server icon ( ), Select “Options” - “Advanced options” and click on “Clear License” to clear all the previous licenses. |

| Does the PC that is to be the "Server" require a static or dynamic IP address? |
SmartWorks server needs a workstation with static IP address to run |
| The server I want to connect to is not listed in the server's list. How will I connect to the required server? |
SmartWorks is designed to detect a maximum of 5 SmartWorks servers running on the network. You can key in the server IP address or name of the machine where SmartWorks server is running, in the combo box and click OK to connect to the required server. |
| What are the different platforms on which SmartWorks server can run? |
SmartWorks server can run on any Windows platform i.e. win 95, win 98, win 2000, win 2003, win XP and win NT. |

| What is SmartWorks database? Where does it reside? |
SmartWorks stores the data in simple flat files that by default resides in 'C:\' drive, in a directory called 'smartdb', when the SmartWorks server starts. You can see the path in the server settings dialog box beside the label 'Home Directory' |
| Is there a way to move the SmartWorks database to any other drive? |
| Suppose that you want to shift the database from dir1 to dir2, please follow the steps below: |
1. |
Stop the SmartWorks server |
2. |
Open 'swdb.conf' file that has the configuration values for the server. This file is present by default in the Windows directory of your machine. |
3. |
Under the section '[Home Dir]' you will find the directory of the SmartWorks database. Edit the path to the required path, dir2. |
4. |
Copy the contents of dir1 to dir2 and restart SmartWorks server. |

| How do I configure TCP/IP on my machine? |
| Please follow the below steps. |
| 1. |
Choose the "Network" program present in the computers "Control Panel". |
| 2. |
If no network adapters are found. Click the "Add" button and choose "Adapter", from here choose "Microsoft" and "Dial-Up adapter", then follow the steps to install this adapter. |
| 3. |
If the adapter is found but TCP/IP protocol is not found, you can install this by choosing "Add" and the "Protocols", TCP/IP can be found in the "Microsoft" protocols. |
| 4. |
After the protocol has been added you need to give an IP (Internet Protocol Address) to your computer, you can do this by choosing the "TCP/IP" from the list of protocols and then clicking on properties. From here go to the "IP address" tab and enter an IP address, for e.g. (125.0.0.1). Now your Machine has been configured. Note down the IP address that you have given for your machine, as this is the server name that you have to enter in the "Configure Server" dialog in the SmartWorks Clients. |

| What is SmartWorks Server Manager? |
SmartWorks Server Manager is a graphical user interface provided for doing some server settings directly without involving the clients. This can be accessed from Start / Programs / SmartWorks / SmartWorks server menu option where the server is installed. It can be used to do settings such as
Mails type (SMTP or MAPI)
Sending mails using TO or CC or BCC
Enable / disable mails
Minimum disk space limit for SmartWorks server to function
View and clear license
View server log and error log files etc. |
| How is the 'Server Manager' different from the 'SmartWorks server settings' option got by right clicking the SmartWorks server icon? |
There is no difference between these two. Both of them provide the same server setting options. SmartWorks server manager specifically helps when the SmartWorks server is running on Win NT / 2000 server/2003 server/XP as a service. |
| How do I change the port number at which the server runs? |
To do this right click on the SmartWorks server icon in the system tray and choose options. Enter a port number. This will prompt you to shut down and restart the server. You can choose Yes and restart the server from Program Files /SmartWorks/SmartWorks Server/ SmartWorks Server. Now you can confirm that server is running at new port number by choosing options dialog box.
SmartWorks Clients need to be configured to connect to new port number. |

| I want to move the SmartWorks server from one m/c to another. How do I do it? |
| Lets say you would like to transfer SmartWorks Server from m/c1 to m/c2. Please follow the steps given below: |
| 1. |
Install SmartWorks server on m/c2 |
| 2. |
Stop the SmartWorks server on m/c1 |
| 3. |
Stop SmartWorks server on m/c2 if it is currently running |
| 4. |
On m/c1 you can find where the path of SmartWorks database by right clicking on SmartWorks icon in system tray and choosing options. The path is present beside the label 'Home Directory'. |
| 5. |
Copy the contents of the 'smartdb' folder from m/c1 and overwrite the contents of 'smartdb' folder in 'c:' drive of m/sc2. 'C:\smartdb' is the default path where database created when server is run for first time. This can also be changed. |
| 6. |
Now you can start the server on m/c2 and point your clients to m/c2. Connect to the new server from SmartWorks clients and ensure that the server is running properly. |
| It seems like the server is running, but the clients are not able to connect to the server and an error “Connection refused” is flashed. What could be the problem? |
SmartWorks server allows you to set a limit for free disk space below which it stops responding. This setting can be found in SmartWorks server manager or in advanced server settings option, got by right clicking the SmartWorks server icon. Please check the disk space limit set for the server to accept the connections. Generally SmartWorks server functions better with a hard disk space of minimum 25MB in the drive where its database resides. |
